Money and Payments in Sri Lanka: Essential Tourist Tips on Cash, Cards & ATMs

Sri Lanka is still a cash-first country, but it is gradually moving toward card and digital payment methods.

In most everyday situations, the availability of payment methods generally follows this order:

  • Cash (Sri Lankan Rupees)
  • Credit and debit cards
  • Digital or contactless payments

In major cities and popular tourist areas, card payments are widely accepted, and limited contactless payment options are also available. However, once you move outside urban areas, cash becomes essential.

ATM Cash Withdrawals in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has a wide network of ATMs across the island, operated by both government and private banks.

ATMs are commonly found in towns, cities, shopping areas, and near banks. In rural areas, ATMs may be limited, so it’s best to withdraw cash when passing through larger towns.

Most banks allow foreign debit and credit card withdrawals. However, withdrawals usually come with an additional charge, typically around 3%–4%, which includes bank and exchange rate fees.

In general, withdrawing Sri Lankan cash from ATMs is straightforward and reliable.

Cards commonly supported at ATMs:

  • Visa
  • Mastercard
  • American Express (limited)
  • UnionPay
  • JCB

Using Credit & Debit Cards in Sri Lanka

When it comes to money and payments in Sri Lanka, credit and debit cards are the second most widely accepted payment method after cash.

Visa and Mastercard are the most commonly accepted card types. If a merchant supports card payments, they usually display card logos at the counter or entrance.

It’s always best to ask whether card payments are accepted before making a purchase, especially at smaller shops or restaurants.

A simple local observation: if a place has air conditioning, there’s a good chance it also accepts card payments 😄

Places where card payments are usually accepted:

  • Supermarkets such as Keells, Cargills, Arpico, Laugfs, and SPAR
  • Most hotels and larger restaurants
  • Many bars and cafes in tourist areas

When using taxis, card acceptance depends heavily on how you book:

  • Ride-hailing apps like Uber and PickMe support card payments
  • Street taxis and hired vehicles are almost always cash-only

Important warning:

Some merchants may try to add an extra 3%–4% fee for card payments. This practice is illegal in Sri Lanka. If a merchant attempts this, you are well within your rights to refuse and insist on paying the displayed price.

Digital & Contactless Payment Methods

Digital and contactless payment methods are still limited in Sri Lanka.

While some options may be available in major cities and shopping centers, you should not rely on digital payments during your travels, especially outside urban areas.

For tourists, cash and cards remain the most reliable and practical payment methods throughout the country.

Our Recommendation

As soon as you arrive at the airport, withdraw or exchange around LKR 30,000 (approximately USD 100) in cash.

From this amount, set aside LKR 20,000 and keep it deep in your wallet or purse as an emergency fund.

Why LKR 20,000?
This amount is usually sufficient to cover a long-distance taxi ride and help you reach a populated area or major city if you ever need to leave your current location quickly.

Use the remaining LKR 10,000 for your day-to-day expenses and top it up as needed during your trip.

Before traveling to Sri Lanka, make sure to inform your bank that you will be using your debit and credit cards abroad. This helps prevent unexpected transaction declines.

If you plan to use card payments or digital payment methods, always confirm with the establishment in advance that they accept them.

For currency exchange, use banks or reputable money exchange counters only.

You may encounter street agents offering better exchange rates, especially in city areas. While some may be true, others can be fraudulent. It’s best not to take the risk — stick to official and trusted exchange services.
